Exploring Therapeutic Filmmaking: Bridging Art and Psychology

In the vast landscape of film studies, the concept of identification holds a profound significance. It is through the mechanisms of identification that cinema wields its remarkable ability to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and inspire catharsis in its audience. As Jean Louis Baudry eloquently noted in 1974, the filmmaker, much like a conductor, orchestrates the intricate dance of identification through cinematic elements such as shooting angles, point-of-view shots, and narrative structure. In this symphony of sight and sound, the audience becomes immersed in the world of the film, projecting themselves onto the characters and experiencing their journey as their own.

With this research I wanted to create a playground for both filmic and scientific exploration and expression. I wanted to explore the transformative potential of film as a therapeutic medium as my graduation project for my double degree in Psychology and Film. In this interdisciplinary research endeavor, with my crew, we delve into the fusion of psychodramatic techniques and cinematic storytelling, seeking to capture the essence of group experience through the lens of symbolic play. Inspired by the pioneering work of Jacob L. Moreno and his exploration of psychodrama's therapeutic effects,
our aim is to translate the cathartic experience of the main character onto the spectator, blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, performance and perception.

Through the lens of the camera, we tried to find a call to invite the audience to engage in a collective journey of introspection and healing. Drawing upon Moreno's insights into the transformative power of psychodrama, we envision a cinematic landscape where the spectator becomes not merely an observer, but an active participant in the unfolding narrative, a silent witness to the cathartic release of emotions, the unraveling of inner truths.

Embedded within the fabric of my research lies the question:
Can a therapeutic group experience, filmed according to the principles of the Apparatus Theory, resonate with the spectator on a deeply cathartic level?

Through qualitative inquiry and intimate interviews with members of the film crew, participants, and spectators alike, we tried to understand cinematic catharsis, exploring the ripple effects of the group experience on the individual psyche.
